David spero – churches

April 20, 2012 § Leave a comment

When having a tutorial with my tutor Harry Hardie he directed me to a photographer called David Spero and his project called churches in which he journeyed around looking for old churches which still are or having now become something else, each of his images are of the building of the church but in some images you would never guess that it was a church. Each phot is takes far back as to get the entire building in shot, Harry suggested that i do the same and rather than focusing so much on the flowers in the photo step back much further and take photos of the buildings almost, trying to attract the viewer’s attention, so that the image seems to be about the building or the landscape rather than the flowers left in the scene. I think this was where i was going wrong when i reflect back on the images i have so far, i still am really close  to the flowers and i almost without realising make the flowers the main focus in each image so i need to look more at the backdrop and surrounds that i am photographing it.

One other think that i noticed when looking at David Spero’s images they all work together and when looks into why they all work together even though they are off lots of different locations is the colour of  the images and also the sky, i think the colour of the sky plays a huge roll in the photos, my photos skies are bright blue others are white or grey and i think this really stands out when viewing them all together, when looking at Davids images though all the skies match up to be the grey/ white colour and that way the sky is less of an attraction.

so i need to plan when i take my images i have to pick days when the weather is dull and constant, i will try the for my new few shoots and see how they compair to the shoots i have already produced.

update on my images

i’m slowly bringing the collection together but the one thing i am struggling with is i don’t feel they all tie together as much as i was hoping, i think each image look and works with the flowers in each memory but i still feel that the images don’t go together but i also think that it is too early to tell with just these images to look at, and it’s hard to just pick location but the locations have to all work with my personal memory’s.

so from here i plan to carry on shooting and building up more images, it may be the case once i have a lot of images to work with i just selection the one i think work well together as a group and choose those to print up and the other could go in the group book publication i am doing and or just sit the others on my site.

Hanging my silk prints

I’ve been thinking more about how i would hang my material prints and also about the size of the prints. i think it would be nice to print each image pretty big almost a 1.5mx 1.5m if it is possible, when visiting ikea the home furniture shop i was looking in the pictures and canvas part and i really like the huge canvas they have and how up close you don’t see as much but when you step back they look really good, i also noticed they was the display the large canvases in the shop was by a sliding mechanism hung from the ceil and you can scroll each image across as you look at the different images, this would properly be over the top for my images and would take up too much space in the gallery space, and  would cost lots also but i have been thinking of other solutions that i could do. I have come up with the idea of having my material prints made into curtains or showers curtains something along those lines and having all my printing on one pole connected to the wall and viewers can simply pull across each image they wish to look at just like closing a curtain, so only one image would be able to view at one time and they would properly have to stand back to look at each image and i don’t know how well that would work.

One of my other ideas was to get the images printed smaller a more common A2 size print on material and hang each print in almost the time way using wire and metal clips which i think  look modern and sleek and would not detract from the images themselves

these photos caught my attention because i found them quite comical in the way in which we allows something natural and free to be limited and control within our modern ideas of our world and locations, why do we ortamatically asume that flowers should be planted in circles and squares? defind in pavement around a tree? i think this is why when we come across flowers left for people in and around our surrounds within a city they stand out, we take notice but they also look out of place almost shocked that it’s something so uncontrolled unlike the flower beds we create to remind us of nature.

First image tester

This was one of my first images, taken in a park car park on a sunny, i decided to place the flowers in my friend’s car window for this memory. i decided to take a really wide shot of the car park with all the cars and also facing the light to get the glare on the camera lens which i  intended to do as part of the memory. I think at first the photo isn’t the most hugely over interesting photo takes, the way the light is hitting all the cars and the long shadows makes the image look calm and relaxing and the flowers i place in the photo aren’t over powers at all with is what i had hoped to achieve because i would rather the viewer question the location first before then looking more closely for something, an answer and then coming across the flowers, and when put with the whole collection it become a running theme. I think the photos will very much work only as a collection of images, alone the image may seem weak but all together it works as one piece.

Also well as reflection on the image i also starting thinking about editing my image, i have seen in other works of photographers they over expose the image to produce an almost white haze on the image, as i think this would work well not just as reflecting it as a memory but also we putting it into fabric, on white fabric the image would seem to be fading into the material.

Botantical gardens

I visited the botanical gardens in Birmingham just to see what would come from it because i had been so inspired by the random images i found of the photos of garden centers ect and these are a few of the images i took, i was more focused on the actual building than the plants inside and how the old Victorian building worked in contrast to the tropical plants inside and how the plants had started to climb and mix with building, i found it really interesting and i found it useful getting out and having the day photographing, i feel now like i am ready to start photographing my flowers series and i am really excited to start experimenting with what i how come across in my research and seeing some outcomes .
